Special Education Teacher with Over 19 Years' Experience

Get To Know The Teacher
An avid traveler with an innate love of learning, I taught Special Education in the public school setting for 11 years, where I also tutored privately for 5 years, before moving out of the state I grew up in. For the last 7 years, I have worked as an online educator for students of all ages with diverse needs – PreK through adults. While the majority of my background and experience is in Special Education, I have also worked with students just struggling to keep up due to pace, class size or even instructional style. I have even had the chance to work with countless parents through the IEP / various educational processes at private and public schools, as well as assist with homeschooling. As a teacher, I believe the most important part to reaching any student is creating a solid relationship built on mutual trust, respect and understanding. (And this goes for the students’ family, too!) From there, motivation and a feeling of success can take over and forward progress will occur! My goal is to always make learning feel like we aren’t learning anything at all, but, in reality, we are. While online learning may evoke mixed feelings, fortunately, I have had the pleasure of figuring out how to make it work successfully (before it was necessary!) With interactive and engaging lessons, that are designed to not only meet a student where they are, but also centered around their individual strengths, needs and interests, confidence will increase and students will be ready to attempt what were previously “difficult” tasks. I find that breaking skills down into manageable chunks, and a scaffolding approach to introducing new concepts and skills ensures success all while adding in incremental challenges. I look forward to helping students/families in any way possible and I love the creative flexibility that comes along with independent tutoring because TRULY doing what kids/families need is what all education should be about.
